Sri Venkateswara University, named after the Lord of the Seven Hills, came into existence as a teaching and affiliating University on the 2nd September, 1954, for the encouragement of higher education and research in all branches of learning. It was intended to fulfil the long felt need of the people of Rayalaseema for their educational advancement.
The University Library was started in the year 1955 with a small collection of 6,700 books taken from the Sri Venkateswara College, Tirupati, administered by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams. Initially the library was housed in one portion of the college main building. Later, it was shifted to the present building which was declared open in July 1964, by Late Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India. He described it as Taj Mahal of the South
The plinth area of the library building is about 56,637 sq. ft. of which 19,558 sq.ft. is occupied by the Stack Area, 16,980 sq. ft. is reader’s area, 5,100 sq. ft. is the work space and the rest for miscellaneous use. The library has four reading halls with a seating capacity for 400 users at a time.
The university library, centrally situated and easily accessible to all the departments on the campus has steadily grown over the years and it has 3,75,600 documents as on today. It includes textbooks, reference books, general books, gift books, reports, back volumes of Journals. The library subscribes to about 400 print journals of National and International importance.
The library is kept open for readers between 8-00 AM to 10.00-00 PM on all working days with the transactions at the circulation counter except on Sundays and Holidays, on which days the library will function from 10-00 AM to 5-00 PM for study and consultation purpose only.
The library serves the information needs of the Students, Research Scholars, Teaching Faculty, Non-Teaching Staff and Deposit Borrowers numbering around 10,000 and it is the central facility for 4 constituent colleges of S.V.University including University College of Engineering.
In order to achieve functional efficiency, the library is organized into 11 different sections. They are Circulation Section, Book Acquisitions Section, Periodicals Section, Technical Processing Section, Stack Area (Science & Technology), Stack Area (Arts, Humanities &Social Sciences), Reference - cum - Documentation Section, Competitive Examinations Cell & Text Book Section, Binding Section, Electronic Data Processing & Digital Library and Administrative Section.
Besides Book Lending service, the library offers Reader’s Advisory Service, Reference Service, Reprography Service, Inter-Library Loan facility and Facility to Search E-Journals, Databases and Internet Resources. The Library follows Open Access System in all the wings of the Library

The S.V.University Library is a participating member in the INFLIBNET Programme of UGC. The UGC has provided financial assistance for computerisation of SVU Library under INFLIBNET Programme. Library professionals at various levels were trained in DOS, CDS/ISIS and SOUL ( Software for University Libraries ) software packages by INFLIBNET Centre staff, Ahmedabad. The creation of Database for Theses, Serials and books were completed. Library in-house operations are totally automated
SV University library is a participating member of UGC INFONET Programme. Under this programme, the V-Sat facility to have access to Internet is installed in SVU Computer Centre. The INFLIBNET has provided 1 Gbps connectivity to S.V. University. The Computer Centre has provided Internet connectivity to all the Departments/Institutions on the Campus.
Digital Library with a provision to accommodate 42 users at a time was established in SVU Library inorder to access about 15,000 e-resources provided by UGC-INFLIBNET centre, under e-ShodhSindu programme.

Competitive Examinations Cell
The novel feature of S.V.University Library is the establishment of Competitive Examinations Cell with the main objective of providing reading material for student community preparing for various competitive examinations. The cell provides books and journals relating to GATE, GRE, GMAT, CAT, Civil Services, Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission, TOEFL, UGC-NET and other competitive examinations. So far, we have procured about 15,500 documents relating to various Competitive Examinations
Book Procurement Policy
- The Students preparing for various Competitive Examinations are encouraged to record their suggestions for procurement of new titles as per their requirement.
- Students are also involved in the purchase of books for various competitive examinations by spot selection.
- The Faculty Members will select books of their choice by spot selection in the book exhibitions arranged in SVU Library.
- The Faculty Members will select books of their choice by visiting Chennai and Bangalore.
Book Exhibitions are arranged during important occasions inorder to create awareness among student community about the latest books and also to ensure optimum usage of the library collection.
Display of New Arrivals
The newly purchased books are displayed for a period of 10 -15 days inorder to create awareness about the new arrivals.
Interaction with users
The librarian interacts in an informal way with users at the time of issue of No Dues Certificate to find out additional services required and also existing services can be redesigned inorder to meet their ever ending demands.
Interaction with experts
The professional staff working in SVU Library interacts with experts in the library and information field during their visit to the Library and Information Science Department/ University/ Darshan of Lord Venkateswara.
Earn While Learn Programme
Economically backward students are engaged to work in the library during extended hours and 18 students were engaged this year to perform book shelving, rectification and accessioning of Gift Books.

The SVU Library Home Page provides a common gateway to access Online journals under UGC-INFONET Programme, Online Open Access Journals, Digital Library of Ph.D. Theses, HDD on Chemistry, OAister Digital Depository, JCCC-UGCINFONET and SVUL OPAC.
Digital Library of Ph.D. Theses
SVU Library is participating member of UGC-SHODHGANGA Project, under this programme S.V.University has received 20,90,000 for digitization of theses and dissertations available in S.V.University. Sofar 4,000 theses were digitized in different disciplines and uploaded into SHODHGANGA website.
